In this piece, “Dialog” for String Quartet, chords are not used to shape a phrase by tension and release. Instead, each chord is conceived as a sonorous unit in a phrase whose structure is determined more by melodic shape and color value than by the movement of the harmony. Such a procedure does not negate tonality, which the composer maintained in this piece by whole-tone scale and quartal combination chords of the C tonal center (Total 26 Pages).
The piece is in the large-scale form of ABA, which composer favored. In the middle section of the piece, composer simulated the homophonic texture by giving the cello a simple hexatonic tune, analogous to the Korean folk theme, while the other instruments supply a static background.
