The Symphonic Poem, The Land of Morning Calm, is a single movement programmatic orchestral work. The piece divides into five characteristic sections with the subtitles of Rock, River, Sea, Wind, and Mountain. Each of the sections has their own idée fixe motive representing the concept embodied in the subtitles. The degree of texture (homophonic/polyphonic), dynamics (strong/weak), density (thick/thin), velocity (fast/slow), and orchestration (emphasizing various sections of the orchestra) is determined by depiction of the subtitles.
Even the pitch and harmonic contents are based on tonal hierarchy, such atonal materials as whole-tone scale, altered chromatic scale, pentatonic scale, poly-chord, tertial and quartal combinations, sound-mass are employed in order to express tension and relaxation of the music.
